| The olive oil The olive tree for 6,000 years it has played a leading role in the economic, technical, artistic and religious history of humanity. For thousands of years its branches have symbolized peace, honor and victory; its oil anoints kings, priests and bishops, and believers, to whom it gives strength, hope and salvation, consecrating birth, death and other important moments of their lives. Olive oil is one of the oldest and most important products of the material culture in the Sabina. The history of the cultivated olive tree in the Sabina area begins during the II century BC. Its spread is linked to the development of the Italian civilizations, from the Roman empire to the contemporary world. Galeno, a famous II century AD doctor described the olive oil produced in Sabina as “the best in the world”. Since olive oil is a very precious product, remarkable efforts are made to protect the quality of the Sabina extra virgin olive oil that is actually designated as DOC and DOP. Late October through mid December, local olive growers welcome visitors to the mills to taste oil on "bruschetta" (grilled bread dressed with extra virgin olive oil and garlic).
The world's largest olive tree The world’s greatest olive tree is found in Canneto (near by the Farfa Abbey): seven m. across, two thousands years old.
The olive oil museum The village Castelnuovo di Farfa has dedicated a whole museum to the olive oil, much appreciated for its originality: multimedia room on tradition and history; a 18th century intact oil-mill; a collection of ancient oil presses; modern art exhibition by Alik Cavaliere, Gianandrea Gazzola, Maria Lai, Hidetoshi Nagasawa, Ille Strazza.
